History of Reiki A Japanese born Christian monk, Dr Mikao Usui, rediscovered Reiki in the mid 1800’s. While teaching in a Christian college Dr Usui was asked by a student how Jesus facilitated the healing miracles that he performed. Usui had no answer. The question had planted a seed and before the year was out Dr Usui resigned from the College and set out on his destined life path to answer "that question". Dr Usui set out on a quest, determined to learn the secret of healing so that he might help others. His journey took him to many countries and for many years he attempted to trace the same footsteps as Jesus and Buddha. Unable to find knowledge of healing in translations of the Sutras, Buddha's teachings, he sought out the original version. Here was to be found the wisdom of healing and means of empowerment. During his journey Dr Usui visited and asked different Buddhist Sects if they could perform the miracles that Buddha performed - could they heal the body. The Buddhist's felt that the healing of the spirit and the healing of the body were not always directly connected. They concentrated on the spirit and not on the body they felt that the body and the spirit were separate and that the spirit needed to be healed, they left the healing of the body to the medical doctors. Dr Usui finally went to a Zen Monastery in Kyoto; he asked the same question of the Abbot "Do Zen monks and priests know how to heal the body?" and the Abbot answered "Not anymore". Dr Usui was puzzled by this answer "What do you mean not anymore?" The Zen Abbot explained that they have been concentrating so heavily on healing the spirit they had forgotten how to heal the body. The Abbot felt that if Dr Usui's destiny were to rediscover how Master Buddha had healed the body, it would unfold before him. So Dr Usui asked if he might stay and study at the Zen monastery. He was accepted, for all people who desire mastery were accepted in their quest. Wanting to read the sacred books in their original language, Dr Usui learned Chinese and eventually Sanskrit. It was in the Indian sutras, written in Sanskrit that he discovered a formula for contacting a higher power that could bestow healing. Dr Usui had now found the information he had been looking for, yet it was only a formula; simply knowing the formula did not give him the ability or understanding to heal. He talked to the Abbot about this. It was decided that all he could do now was to follow the practices in the formula. So he traveled to the holy mountain of Kori-yama where he fasted, meditated and followed the directions in the formula for 21 days. Usui realized he had to attain a high-altered state of consciousness in order to be empowered with healing energy. On his arrival at the mountain, he placed 21 little stones in front of him and removed one at the passing of each day as a kind of calendar. During this time he read the Sutras, sang and meditated. Nothing unusual happened until the last day dawned. When he saw a shining light moving towards him with great speed. As he looked at the light he realized that the light had consciousness and that it was communicating with him. He realized the light had the healing power he was looking for and if he was to receive what the light had to offer, he must allow the light to strike him. However, he was told that the light was so powerful that if it did strike him, it might kill him. He was given the opportunity to decide. Would he risk death to obtain the knowledge for which he had searched so long? He decided the ability to heal the sick would be of such great value that it would be worth risking death to receive it. The beam struck him in the forehead knocking him unconscious. Rising out of his physical body, he was shown beautiful bubbles of light filled with colors. In the bubbles were symbols. As he contemplated each symbol, he received an attunement for that symbol and knowledge on its use. In this way, he was initiated into the use of the Reiki healing power. When he returned to normal consciousness, the sun was standing high in the sky. He felt full of strength and energy and began to climb down the mountain. In his rush, he stubbed his toe. He held it with his hands for a few minutes and the bleeding stopped and the pain disappeared. Since he was hungry, he stopped at an inn at the wayside and ordered a large Japanese breakfast. The innkeeper warned him not to eat such a large meal after fasting. Dr Usui was able to eat it all without the least of consequences. The granddaughter of the innkeeper had a bad toothache, from which she had been suffering for several days. Dr Usui laid his hands on her swollen face and after a while the swelling started to subside and the pain eased. She ran to her grandfather and told him that his guest was no ordinary monk. Dr Usui returned to his monastery but decided after a few days to go to a Beggar City in the slums of Kyoto to treat beggars and help them lead a better life. He spent 7 years in the slums, treating many illnesses. One day, he noticed that the same old faces kept returning. When he asked why they had not begun a new life he was told that there was too much responsibility and that it was better to go on begging. Dr Usui left the slums and while returning to the monastery as he walked along he was greeted in Spirit by the teachers who had greeted him on Kori-yama. They bestowed upon him understanding of two very important elements: healing of the Spirit and the responsibility of the healer in the healing process. Dr Usui had realized that he had done the reverse of the Buddhists by concentrating on healing the body and not the Spirit. He was at this time given the Spiritual Principles of Reiki by the Teachers in Spirit. |

Benefits of Reiki Reiki and other healing techniques: All healers use the Ki (chi – life force energy), but not all use Reiki. Reiki is a special life force energy that can be channeled only by a person that was attuned to it. Most healers that were not attuned to Reiki by a Reiki Master use a different energy, than Reiki, sometimes involving their own Chi. People who worked in healing before, report an increase of 50% in their healing powers after they were trained in Reiki. It is possible for a person to be born with Reiki or receive it in other ways too. Reiki cannot harm: Since the Divine Awareness guides Reiki, it can never cause harm. It always knows what the person needs and will adjust itself to create the required effect. The person does not need to worry whether to receive Reiki or not. It always helps. Furthermore, since the healer does not manipulate the healing and does not decide what to work on and what to heal, he/she is not in danger of receiving the Karma of the patient. Because the healer does not do the healing, it is easier to put the ego aside and let the Reiki presence flow through. Unlimited energy: Reiki heals by the flow of the universal energy going through the healer. The healer’s personal energy will never be lacking during/after a session. In fact the Reiki considers both the healer and the patient as people who need healing and it heals both. Giving Reiki sessions always increases the energy of the healer and fills him/her with peace and love. Everyone can learn Reiki: The ability to learn Reiki does not rely on the intelligence of the person or on how many meditations they do. It does not require years of learning. It is simple and transfers from the teacher to the student. When it happens, the person has Reiki and can practice Reiki. It is simple and easy for anyone to learn Reiki. Reiki is a pure technique of healing that does not rely on the individual talent or acquired skills of the healer. Therefore the personality of the healer does not tend to influence the importance of the experience. One can clearly feel the direct connection to the love and healing of the Divine. Self-treatment: In addition to treating others with Reiki, you can treat yourself. This is one of the major benefits of Reiki. It works as good on you, as on others. Guidelines for self-treatment are given while learning Reiki. The “double-sided” nature of Reiki: The nature of Reiki is “double-sided” – It includes male and female energies together. The male part comes from above. It relates to the crown chakra and higher chakras and is called “Shiva” in the Tantra System. The female part come from below and relates to the root chakra and is called “Shakti” in the Tantra System. These two energies connect with each other and decide how much from each polar is needed. When the energy leaves the palm of the hand it has the right combination of healing male and female e energies for the patient. It is interesting to mention that when more than one person is treating another, the Reiki connects with all the healers and takes from some the male energy and from some the female energy to achieve the right combination for the patient. How does Reiki heal? We are alive because the life force is flowing through us. The life flows in the physical body through channels or wheels that are called Chakras, Meridians and Nadis. It also flows around us in an energy field called Aura. The life force nourishes the body parts and the cells and helps them in their vital functions. When the flow of this life force is disturbed, it causes the reduction and weakness in the function of one organ and in the physical body tissues. The life-force energy responds to thoughts and emotions. Its flow is interrupted when we accept consciously or unconsciously negative thoughts or emotions about ourselves. The negative thoughts and emotions connect to the energy field and create a disturbance in the flow of the energy. This reduces and weakens the vital function of the organs and the energy cells in the physical body. Reiki heals by flowing through the disturbed areas in the energy field and recharges them with positive energy. It increases the vibration of the energy field in and around the physical body, where the negative thoughts and emotions are connected. This causes the negative energy to break and fall. Doing this, the Reiki cleans, organizes and heals the energy channels and allows the life-force energy to flow in a healthy and natural way. What does Reiki treat? Reiki is a very powerful, yet it is gentle and subtle at the same time. Throughout its history it helped in curing any known diseases and injuries, including severe problems, cuts, bruises, fractures, headaches, colds, flu, sore throats, sunburns, fatigue, insomnia, impotency, memory loss, lack of self confidence, etc. It always helps and works to improve the efficiency of any other treatment. The Reiki treatment gives the feeling of great radiation and brings many benefits to the patient and the healer, including altering states of awareness and spiritual experiences. In cases where the patient has a medical problem and desires to receive Reiki, it is recommended to do it under the supervision of an open-minded doctor or another medical practitioner. Reiki will improve the results of a medical treatment, diminish or take away the pain, reduce negative side effects, shorten length of treatment, reduce stress and help in creating optimism. |
